Monitorama is a conference for operations engineers (DevOps), developers, systems administrators, and other industry professionals that covers one of the fundamental aspects of DevOps – monitoring. Monitorama’s first conference in 2013 was a huge success – since then it has become an annual event that attracts more and more people every year.
September 4-5 , 2018
Compagnietheater. Kloveniersburgwal 50, Amsterdam
When Jason Dixon organized Monitorama for the first time in 2013, his primary goal was to bring together the community of Open Source monitoring contributors in a forum that would allow them to collaborate in person, sharing their vision for the future and continuing to promote cooperation and interoperability. Although Monitorama has grown considerably since 2013, the conference’s main purpose stays the same: it aims at creating a space for everyone who wants to meet the industry experts and community leaders and talk about the newest approaches in monitoring and observability.
Challenges and solutions
Monitorama’s guests and participants traveled to the conference from all over the world: it was important to find a city easily reachable from any continent. Amsterdam is one of Europe’s fastest-growing travel, creative, financial and technology hubs. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a rich cultural life, business-friendly environment, and a highly diverse population. Jason’s decision to host Monitorama in Amsterdam was also affected by his personal preferences: “I have never been to the Netherlands before and was very curious about the country”.
When searching for the venue to host Monitorama, Jason had a few requirements:
It needed to be located in the city center but not in the crowded and noisy part. At the same time, there had to be a good access to shops, bars, and restaurants.
It needed to comfortably fit 300 people and have enough space for exhibitor tables, stands, and casual seating.
Monitorama was organized from the US: it was important to work with professional and responsive staff experienced in working with the distantly-based companies.
Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam’s thriving city center, on beautiful Kloveniersburgwal canal, Compagnietheater is a perfect space for a conference of any size and shape. The venue combines modern industrial looks with a monumental ambiance of a historical building. Excellent technical equipment combined with attentive staff always ready to address the guests’ needs definitely helped to make the event outstanding. The venue catered to all the organizer’s needs and left a great impression on the conference’s guests.
“Compagnietheater is a beautiful building, it’s layout suited to our show very well. After confirming the location, we found out that our friends from Grafana were holding their event at the same venue earlier this year. Hearing about their good experience certainly made us feel better about our choice.”
– Jason Dixon, Founder of Monitorama
300 people from around the world came to Amsterdam to talk about software monitoring, its observability, reliability and the impact on our professional and personal lives. The event was a great success, a lot of interesting and important questions were raised a lot of interesting connections were made. The atmosphere at the event was friendly and cozy: the guests networked and exchanged ideas during coffee and lunch breaks, learning from those small-group chats as much as from the big presentations. With its industrial looks, warm ambiance and highly professional staff, Compagnietheater was a perfect space for Monitorama.
Thank you to everyone who helped us ship another successful event. We had a fantastic time in Amsterdam and it was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces and meeting more new ones.
